Fall SketchyTime at Retro Rubber

Another two weeks for a fun sketch to use up scraps in your stash at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog.  Patterned paper, specialty paper or in my case, scraps of paper I have inked with various methods over the years.

Several stamps were used in the creation of this card.  First is an ancient rubber brayer that creates a gauze look background.  It is at least 20 years old!  Pink Ink for Impression Obession Falling Leaves stamp and die set was released in 2018.  The sentiment is by Boxer Scrapbooking release in 2007 named Celebrations.

Since many of these "experiments" were done over the last 15 years or so, the colors listed are the most probable colors . . . my color swatch book was very helpful in identification.

  •  Top left and bottom left are from the same scrap.  A foam brayer was used to add color from Kaliedacolor Autumn Leaves.
  • The next section also appears twice uses a solid rubber brayer and Kaliedacolor Autumn Leaves.  Really a different look.
  • The yellow section was the accidental spill of Fireworks! in Dandelion Yellow.  It has a wonderful shimmer.  The spill happened on my craft mat, and was soaked up with white cardstock.
  • The yellow orange sections are Faber Castelle Gelatos on white cardstock, which are blended with water.
  • The bottom left is Faber Castelle Gelatos on brown cardstock.
  • The white with swirls was an experiment with foam shaving cream and All Purpose Inks in Vegas Gold, Chocolate, and Black Pearl.
  • The ancient gauze patterned brayer also used Kaliedacolor Autumn Leaves.  The inside edge was trimmed with Creative Memories 12-inch Trimmer and the Deckle trimmer blade.
  • The sections are trimmed to various sizes and adhered on the A-2 card base.  The remainder is trimmed from the back to line up with the card base.
  • The center circle is Falling Leaves embossing folder inked in Memento Potters Clay and pressure embossed.  It was a little messy, but works perfection in this sketch as a background.  Spellbinders Standard Circle die was used to die cut the circle.
  • The leaf in the center is Fireworks! in Dandelion Yellow, Tangelo, and Rich Cocoa spritzed on white cardstock.  Pink Ink for Impression Obession Falling Leaves stamp is stamped in Tuxedo black and die cut.   Boxer Scrapbooking's Happy Birthday is stamped in Memento Luxe Morocco and heat embossed with Terra Cotta (manufacturer unknown) embossing powder. Another die cut is glued behind to add some dimension.

I hope you enjoyed this little foray into the uses of different mediums to create a cohesive look.  You never know when an experiment goes well, it could be featured in a future project with left over scraps!

Cherish the Journey Retro Rubber Blog Challenge #24

Retro Rubber Blog Challenge has another fun challenge for the next two weeks.  The theme is travel, which can be interpreted in many ways by using maps, different modes of transportation, or vacation images.  Go check out the blog and see what the Mod Squad has created for your inspiration.  So get out your retro rubber, older than a year, and give it a little inky love!

I decided to make a map travel card that can be used for other purposes.   The journey can be a literal trip or the journey of life!

I found a map stamp that I have had since the late 90’s that is most likely manufactured by Art Impressions because it is grey rubber.  The sentiment is a mix of two sets by Technique Tuesday, “Cherish” and “Journey” are from Words We Love made in 2005 and “the” is from Celebrate Life made in 2007.  All the images are stamped in Ranger Van Dyke Brown on cream card stock and inked around the edges after being trimmed to size.

As for the layers I picked coordinating bits leftover from previous projects. Go check out these links and see how hanging on to a few scraps from previous projects can be incorporated into a new and fun creation!  The textured backing on the sentiment is from Masculine Thinking of You card.  The edges were torn with the help of a Plaid deckle ruler.  The first layer behind the map, wood grain textured Kraft card stock, is from the many practice sheets for the Advent Calendar stable.  The next layer of burlap texture brayer stamping is from the Celebrate Autumn card with deckle torn edges.  The bottom layer of brown Gelato colored card stock is from the Happy Thanksgiving Card.

To assemble the card I laid the bottom four layers together and pulled out my Mini Janome sewing machine to stitch them together with brown thread.  Then the layers were adhered to the A2 size cream card.  The sentiment layers are adhered with dimensional foam adhesive.

So come and play along and enter your project with us at Retro Rubber Blog Challenge!

Escher Birthday ATC

It is time to share another Artist Trading Card for a birthday swap.  The recipient happens to be male, so a masculine version was in order.  I have known him as a ATC trader since the Making Memories Forum days!  I have several ATCs from him and wanted to make something fun and special.

I have been playing around with the Ombre effect and this started as one of the experiments.  The card size version didn’t meet my satisfaction, but when it cut down to 2 ½” x 3 ½” it is perfect!

Front

The background is Faber Castell Gelato in Boysenberry on Strathmore Bristol 300 series.  I love this stuff for water intensive techniques!  After it dried I stamped the Stamp Out Cute Escher Birds to Fish image in a variety of inks.  Colorbox Oyster White was the base blended with Dragonfly black and Sepia Black.  The image was heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  The background is black card stock embossed with Sizzix Dot Matrix.

Back
The small tag die cut is by Quickutz and is stamped with Tsukineko Memento Tuxedo Black.  It is attached to the ATC with a bit of baker’s twine and a glue dot.  The fly charm is attached with glue dots as well.

June Birthday ATC

It is time for the June version of my ATC (Artist Trading Card) Birthday swap.  When I need to jump-start my creativity I look at the leftovers sitting on my table. I was inspired by the punches from the Tonic Butterfly border punch to make a butterfly ATC.  They were from the card that is in the post from Thursday!

The background is Stamp Out Cute stamp that I have owned since the mid 90’s, purchased unmounted at the Portland Stamp Convention.  It is stamped in Tsukinkeo Versa Mark and embossed with clear embossing powder on Bristol 100 pound paper.  Using a heavier card stock is my preference when working with techniques that involve water.  I colored swatches of the stamped area with Faber Casteel Gelatos in Cotton Candy, Lime, and Guava then spritzed it with water.   I moved the color around with a paper towel and removed the excess from the embossed areas.

The tiny butterfly confetti is contained in an envelope made from up-cycled plastic bag packaging die cut with Sizzix Card & Envelope Mini Elegant die.  The edges were sealed with Designer Dries Clear Adhesive.  I found that using a cotton swab I was able to apply a very thin layer that dried more quickly, but still it took overnight!  After the butterfly confetti was sealed into the mini envelope, Vellum Glue Dots adhesive was used to adhere the envelope to the ATC.  The final touch is the “Happy Birthday” sentiment by Studio G stamped in Tsukineko StazOn Azure.

I would like to enter this ATC in the following challenges:

Anything But a Card Challenge #47 Inspired by the Masters

First off, Happy Mother's Day!  This is a gift that I did send to my mother . . . which she has now, so I can post about it's creation!

This month at Anything But a Card the theme is inspiration from the Masters.  I immediately thought of French Impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926) and an exhibit of his paintings I was fortunate to view at the Portland Art Museum sometime in the 90’s.

The image that I associate with Monet is one of water lilies.  No surprise when I researched the topic that Monet painted approximately 250 oil paintings of the lovely Water Lily.  His main focus of his art in the last thirty years of his life was his gardens and ponds that he created around his home.

Naturally I wanted to use an image of Water Lilies that is similar to Claude Monet’s Impressionistic style, so I “had” to go shopping, and found this image at Serendipity Stamps.  The next conundrum to what to stamp the image on . . . on a trip to the local M’s and I found this ceramic wall hanging in the perfect size.  I pulled out my StazOn inks and decided on Forest Green to stamp the image.   I truth I practiced on some paper by tracing the circle and stamping the image and practicing the water color technique discussed below.

I colored on my craft mat with Faber Casteel Gelatos and spritzed the colors with water to activate them.  I used Cotton Candy, Boysenberry, Blueberry, Lime, Green Tea, Spearmint, Lavender, and Guava.  Using quick strokes and two sizes of brushes the wall hanging was complete in less than 20 minutes!  I tested the surface to see if the gelatos would rub off or be moved on the ceramic with more water.   With the StazOn permanent ink and gelatos the pigments are staying put!  I am going to have to try this technique on a few more ceramic items!  To add a finishing touch I stamped Heartfelt Creations Uplifiting Scripture in Tsukineko StazOn Forest Green.  It doesn't seem to matter if the Gelatos are used under or over the stamped images.  Give this a try and see how easy it was to create a simple but beautiful gift!

Come on over and join us at Anything But a Card and make a creation inspired by the Masters!

I would also like to enter the following Challenges with the project:

Clean and Simple Thanksgiving Card

So close to Thanksgiving and I thought I would share another Thanksgiving card with you.  This time I went directly to the leftover’s in my yet to be put away scraps bin.  I had a blast making this card,  HappyThanksgiving;  which incidentally was the Design Team’s favorite over at Crafting By Designs in the Give Thanks Challenge. I had a few leaves and some Gelato colored Bristol card stock that quickly become this wonderful card to send to our daughter who is away at college and unable to come home for Thanksgiving.

1.     I started with a Recollections 6-Bar Kraft card base.  A yellow-gold scrap trimmed to 4 ¼” x 5 ½“ was pressure embossed with Darice Foliage embossing folder and adhered to the center of the card.
2.     A section of the Gelato colored card stock was trimmed to 4” x 5” then I marked 2” from the top edge to draw pencil lines to a diagonal cut.  I trimmed the edges away.  (I also used the trimmed triangles as practice sections for the stamping.)
3.     Another scrap was trimmed to 1” and laid down the center of the Gelato piece.  I hand trimmed the edges to match.
4.     Technique Tuesday’s Hanging by a Thread provided a quick stamped image of stitching along the edges.  The Gelato section is stamped in StazOn Saddle Brown, and the dark red card stock is stamped in Timber Brown.  The “Thanksgiving” sentiment is from Technique Tuesday’s Say It Happy stamp set and is also stamped in Saddle Brown.
5.     I die cut the Technique Tuesday Say It Happy die in Kraft and red.  My favorite glue to use when adhering tiny die cut words is Quickie Glue pen by Sakura.
6.     The oak leaf is left over from the card mentioned above and is made with Gelato colored brown card stock, Heartfelt Creations Leaf Medley Pre-cut stamp, and Spellbinders Foliage die cut.

I would like to enter this card in the following challenges:

As always, thank you for stopping by and enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving

Therapy through crafting is always a great thing!  I needed a pick-me-up last night, and sat down to play with my Gelatos from Faber Castell.  Checking out challenges around the web sometimes, almost always helps get my creative juices flowing.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner and the fall colors in their full glory around here I decided to make an elegant Thanksgiving card.  It also reminds me of all that I am thankful for during this time of year!

Directions:
1.     I started with Strathmore Smooth Bristol weight board in 100 lb.  I wanted to play with the very pigmented Gelatos and water and wanted something that would handle the technique.  (Found the Bristol board in my cleaning/purging of the craft cave.)  Using a lot of pigment from Lemon, Mango, Tangerine, and Red Cherry I colored randomly on the sheet then sprayed with water.  I moved the pigment around a bit with a stipple brush.  I was little impatient so I used the heat gun to speed up the drying process.

2.     The process was repeated with brown card stock.
3.     The surface is a little waxy, so StazOn Timber brown ink was used to stamp the Heartfelt Creations Leaf Medley Precut set.  The leaves were die cut with the coordinating Spellbinders Foliage die set.

4.     A stamp positioner will place the “Happy” and “Thanksgiving” images from Think Ink in the right place inside the label shape from Spellbinders Blossom Tags and Accents set.  The shape was die cut and stippled with more of the Gelatos pigments.  First color on a recycled packaging sheet and spritz with a little water.  Trim cream card stock to 5.25” x 6.25” and use same technique around the edges.
5.     To add texture a piece of Coordinations brown card stock was trimmed to 5” x 6” and pressure embossed with Cuttlebug Basket Weave.  Sand with a sanding block to bring out the white color core.
6.     Then I decided to add a little something-something and dug out Recollections pearls.  Not the right color?  No problem!  StazOn Orange Zest dabbed on changed the hue to match the card!
7.     The final finishing touch?  A bow made with three types of matching fiber.  I have a Simple Bows tool that I used to make the pretty little bow by wrapping the loop part around three times before tying the bow.
8.     Trim the card base to 11” x 6.5” and fold in half.  Ink the edges with StazOn Timber Brown.
9.     The card was assembled using adhesive, glue dots, and dimensional foam.

I hope you enjoy this crafting therapy session creation!  The pleasing results definitely did the trick to cheer me up and was great fun!
