Sketch Time for a Halloween Birthday

Sketches are great way to  a quick start on a card.  The challenge at  Retro Rubber for the next two weeks is to use this sketch!

My sister-in-law has a Halloween birthday, so I typically make her an appropriate themed card.  This year I used the sketch for my inspiration.

I used all scraps from my color bins to create this card, it went together really quickly!

• Darice Crackle Embossing Folder is used on yellow-orange card stock then the texture is popped with a direct inking of VersaFine Vintage Sepia.
• A mat is trimmed from darker orange card stock.  The sentiment by Hero Arts It's Your Day 3/2015 is stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black.
• The witch's hat is die cut with a Cheery Lynn Design die, Witch Hunt.  
• Pumpkins are stamped on lighter orange cardstock in Memento Tuxedo Black with Joy Clair Trick or Treat stamp set from 2016.  They are die cut using a Brother ScanNCut.
• The stems are colored with Chameleon Burnt Umber.
• The layers are adhered together with the sentiment and pumpkins with dimensional foam tape.

I also wanted to share the interior of the card:

•  The witch is from the Cheery Lynn Design Witch Hunt, die cut at the same time as the hat on the front of the card.
• Silhouette Design Store font BIC Trick or Treat Regular is the fun sentiment on the inside of the card.

A New Year a New Challenge at Retro Rubber!

 Welcome back, a new year, a new challenge!  The first challenge of 2021 for Retro Rubber is:

Six years ago, and four years ago we had record snow falls in our part of the country.  This year . . . not so much.  But it's still fun to celebrate snowflakes and all!

I choose to make a birthday card for a nephew with a January birthday.  Maybe a little too cutesy, but it  fits the theme.

• The images are from Winter Warmers by Hunky Dory sent out in November 2017 Creative Stamping magazine from the UK.  The sweater (or jumper as they say in UK) is stamped first in Memento Nautical Blue.  A mask is cut from a post-it note and covers the sweater.  The bear is stamped in  Memento Tuxedo Black.  The sentiment and stars are stamped in Memento Nautical Blue.  The center panel is 3 5/8" x 5", just because I trimmed it after I stamped it!
  
• I will admit I am not an expert at coloring with alcohol ink pens, but I've practice a little on this image.  Chameleon CG5 Cool Grey, PK3 Bubble Gum, and BL4 Corn Flower Blue are used to decorate the bear and his sweater.  I am pretty pleased with my results!
  
• Scrounging through my wintry papers I found some scraps.  The background is Provo Craft (4 3/4" x 6 1/4"),  the white snowflake is unknown (3 3/4" x 4 3/4"), and the strip is SandyLion Let it Snow (2 1/2" x 5"). 
• All the layers are adhered together and now it is ready to be sent off!  (I've made a resolution to get birthday cards out on time this year!)

Magic Picture Changer card for Retro Rubber Challenge

We have a super fun challenge that you can use to create Easter cards, or just about any season for Retro Rubber.  One of our DT is in the Southern Hemisphere and she used this challenge to create a fall card.   Do stop by to see all of the wonderful projects.

I ended up using two diagonals: eggs, die cut, pattern paper AND Easter, die cut, baby animals.  One of my favorite things is to create interactive cards, and have been doing it for years, even before cool dies and online instructions are around.  However this time the process went much quicker with the use of a set of Lawn Fawn dies called Magic Picture Changer.  This is the closed position:

I followed the directions from the Lawn Fawn assembly video. 

• All my images are from the Chirpy Chirp Chirp set (2/2016) and are stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black then colored with Chameleon pens.  
• To layer the images they were first stamped on Post-It notes and fussy cut to create mini masks.
• I used Chameleon NU4 Caramel, YO2 Mellow Yellow, OR4 Seville Orange, PK3 Bubble Gum, and WG3 Warm Gray.   (One of my goals during the social distancing time is to actually sit down and go through the instructions videos about color with Chameleons so I can become a better colorist!)
• The  grass which is peaking through the frame is Memento Pear Tart.
• With the masks still in place the sky is sponged in with an Ink Dauber and Memento Summer Sky.
• The pattern paper is from a very old set of Provocraft papers that I've had for 20 years!  Still have a selection and am glad to see them make an appearance in my crafting.  

This is the card in the open position.  What shows up during the transition is the word: Translation: happy easter.

Baby Elephant for New Baby

It is time for a new challenge at Retro Rubber!  So dig out your older stamps (older than a year) and give them some inky love!  This time around we want to see your baby critters . . . loosely defined as something alive that is a baby!

I have some friends who announced recently that they will be blessed with their second child.  They plan on waiting until the birth to find out the gender, so I wanted to create a somewhat gender neutral baby card.

I started by stamping the Fiskars Teeny Tiny (2012) image in Memento Tuxedo Black and coloring the sweet little elephant in Chameleon BL2 Baby Blue and BL4 Cornflower Blue.  The image was die cut with Spellbinders Label 34, which was pressure embossed with Gold Label 34.  The pressure embossed areas are inked with Versa Color in Baby Blue and the edges are inked with Versa Color Pink.  A second Labels 34 is die cut with Gold Label 34 hearts insert.  The area behind the hearts us also inked with Versa Color in pink on the card base.  The edges of the backing die cut are inked in Versa Color in Baby Blue.  The sentiment is stamped on white cardstock then die cut with Spellbinders Ribbon Banners.  It is pressure embossed and inked with Versa Color in Baby Blue and Pink.  The layers are adhered together with dimensional foam adhesive.

 

I decided to finish off the inside of the card with a sentiment from the set and the sweet little heart!

Great Impressions GDT Sweet Chick

 

It has been delightful to be a Guest Designer for GreatImpressions this month.  This is my third project for the Spring Challenge.  

I used Sweet Chick G499S and a Sizzix Framelit Step-ups to create a fun spring card ready to say hello!  The image is stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black and colored with a variety of Chameleon pens.  The image is die cut and edged with Memento Angel Pink.  Green and light pink DCWV cardstock is die cut with the Sizzix set.  The green die cuts are pressure embossed with Cuttlebug Kaleidoscope embossing folder.  The embossed green sections and the “oh, hello” sentiment are adhered with Imagine On Point Glue.  The Chick is adhered with thin dimensional adhesive.

GDT for Great Impressions Jelly Bean Time Sping Card

This is my second project for Great Impressions as the Guest Designer for March.  It is fun to work with these sweet images!  Jelly Bean Time H284S is combined with Life is Sweeter E890S and several layers to create a springy card.  Jelly Bean Time is stamped on white cardstock in Memento Tuxedo Black and then colored with Chameleon Pens.  The sentiment is stamped in Radiant Neon Electric Pink and the panel is die cut with Elizabeth Craft Designs Stitched Rectangles.  Thin pastel pink ribbon is looped around the corners and a small bow is attached in one corner.  A second Stitched Rectangle is die cut from white cardstock and sponged with Radiant Neon Electric Blue.  The bottom layer is white cardstock brayered with Radiant Neon Electric Pink.  Darice Plaid embossing folder is inked with Radiant Neon Electric blue and the layer is pressure embossed creating a blue and pink plaid pattern.  The embossed layer is attached to the card front, and the top two layers are adhered with dimensional foam adhesive. 

 The inside of the card is embellished with Border of Jelly Beans B246S.

GDT for Great Impressions and Blog Candy

I am excited to be Guest Designing with Great Impressions in March, thank you for having me!   

This is my first of three GDT post with Great Impressions.  Stay tuned for more Spring and Easter related projects featuring Great Impression stamps. 

Happy Spring!  This bright and cheerful image, Springtime Louie (H263S) is so sweet he couldn’t be hidden.  So I started by die cutting a circle through the front of the card and the front pink paper panel.   Louie is stamped in Memento ink and colored with Chameleon pens.  The white was a little stark so I masked him and sponged in some Memento Bamboo Leaves ink.  A yellow scalloped die cut is the bottom frame topped with Spellbinders Wreathe.  A few die cut leaves and flowers from the same set finish the frame.  The flowers were colored with the coordinating Chameleon pens so they would match the image.  A strip of patterned striped paper is topped with yellow, with the Happy Everything (B246S) stamped in Versa Color Cyan.  All the edges of the panels are inked with Cyan before the card is adhered together. 

When you open the card, Louie is smiling away and ready for your handwritten sentiment!

Happy Birthday!

Time for a new challenge at Retro Rubber Challenge Blog!  It is an easy one, just get out your favorite-older-than-a-year-stamps and create a card or project to celebrate a birthday!  Don't forget to tell us how old your stamp is and enter 10 or fewer challenges with your creation!

This is the front of my card, using a Sizzix sentiment Birthday set from 2014 by Stephanie Bernard.  The pop up card die is also by Sizzix.  The cake and candles are from Stephanie's newest set, Stamps of Life Cake2set.  I just couldn't resist combining the old with the new!  I colored my cake and candles with Chameleon pens.  The confetti paper is from my stash.

Let It Snow!

I don’t know about you, but we have had plenty of the white stuff this winter . . . so here is a card celebrating the theme for Retro Rubber Blog Challenge of “Let It Snow!”

I love how easy it is to make a shaker card with the Impression Obsession Shake It windows!  Fortunately for me, my chosen Snowman image by Hampton Art from 2015 was the perfect size for the shaker window.  First I die cut the snowman from glossy cardstock, laid the stamp over the top and applied the acrylic block so I could get a perfect impression.  He is stamped with StazOn Jet Black and then colored with Chameleon pens in OR4 Seville Orange, BR5 Bark, RD4 Crimson Red, and BK3 Deep Black.  I was careful to not smear the StazOn ink when I colored in the image.  Next trimmed white cardstock to 3 ¾” x 5” and die cut a circle in the lower middle for the window to poke through.  Then I pressure embossed it with Cuttlebug Snowflakes embossing folder and gently applied Brilliance Pearlescent Sky Blue directly to the raised snowflakes.  Using an ink dauber, I added more Brilliance Pearlescent Sky Blue around the perimeter of the base card.  The Brilliance Pearlescent Sky Blue ink is heat embossed with clear embossing powder.I used the circle from my die cut to stamp the rest of the scene with the snow flurry and sentiment and then adhered the snowman with dimension foam adhesive. I put a bit of faux snow inside the shaker window and adhered everything together.

It is time for a super cute challenge at Retro Rubber Blog Challenge.  Use a critter stamp!  A critter can be a bird, butterfly, anything with fur, or whatever if it has a cute face!  So come join us and share your cute critter creations at RRBC.

I am not much of a “cute” stamper, so my image choices are a bit limited.   Glad to have this fun peep from Unity Stamp Company that has been around since May of 2014.

I also used a new-to-me Oval Pull Card by Karen Burniston for Elizabeth Craft Designs.  To use this die it is best to just head over to her YouTube channel and take a look at her how to video or this fun video for inspiration.  She is a great designer of moving cards and an excellent teacher as well.

I started with by stamping the peep form the aforementioned Little Sumptin’ Peep set.  He is stamped in Imagine Memento Tuxedo Black on white card stock and colored with Chameleon pens in Cornflower Blue BL4, Indigo BL7, and Mellow Yellow YO2 and then fussy cut.  All of the other papers were from my scrap bin; the patterned plaid paper is a very old Hot Off the Press probably purchased at Michaels 15 years ago!  My scrap of pink was so small I almost didn’t get the 2 additional hearts I needed to hid the sentiment behind the window, glad that worked out!  The balloons and mini present are dies that I have owned forever (think 15+ years) from Quickutz.  The rest of the card is from the Oval Pull Card set, including the cute little heart.  The sentiment that shows through the transparent window is from the Hero Arts OWH Missing You set.  The sentiments are stamped in Imagine Memento Danube Blue.  A little bit of craft thread in coordinating colors finishes the balloons off quite nicely don’t you think?

Happy Birthday with Brads!

It is time to search through your brads and eyelete collection, yes all those wonderful little pieces you just had to have 8 to 10 years ago . . . and find the perfect embellishment for your Retro Rubber creation for our new challenge.

I did just that and found this ancient history layered flower brads (a little worn around the edges) and the sweet butterfly brad.  I can always use a few Birthday Cards in the stash so I was off and running to create something to highlight these fun brads with Retro Stamps.

I used the Fiskars Layer Away Variety stamps (around 8 years in my stash) for the dotted circles, and stamped them in Memento Cottage Ivy and Sweet Plum.  Next I die cut the center circle from the card.   Couldn’t resist a little texture, so I used Lifestyle Crafts Blooms embossing folder to pressure emboss just the front of the card.  Sonlight’s “Happy Birthday” is probably the first unmounted stamp I bought back in 1997 at the Labor Day Stamp Convention in Portland, Oregon.  So it is almost 20 years old!  It is stamped in Memento Luxe Elderberry and heat embossed with clear embossing powder on the inside of the card.   

The flower brads were a little shop-worn so I gave them a little love with my Chameleon pens in VO2 Mauve, VO4 Deep Violet, and GR2 Dark Sage.  The butterfly brad was silver, but with Dark Sage and Deep Violet pens a little color was added to spice it up to match the card.  After placing the brads I realized the front of the card needed to be stabilized a little to support the weight of the brads and compensate for the pressure embossing.  A piece of violet cardstock trimmed to fit inside the card and the center circle was die cut to allow the sentiment to show through then adhered into place. 

I had one more embellishment I found in the search of my stash, a butterfly paperclip.  A strip of paper ribbon is slipped through the clip and adhered into place to add a final touch to the inside of the card.

Seize the Birthday Birds, Bees, Butterflies

April Showers

We are close to the end of April but I am sure that rain is still in the forecast for many parts of our audience.  The challenge for the next fortnight at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is April Showers.  The Design Team has created some lovely cards, so do stop by the blog and leave some love!

I found this lovely House Mouse image that not only incorporates the April Showers but also depicts the May Flowers with the sweet Dandelion umbrella that Monica is holding to protect her from the rain.  I continue to practice with my new colors of Chameleon pens.  It is so much fun to have a palette of 50 colors to choose from!

1.     Spritz Goosebumps on Bristol weight board and set aside to dry.

2.     Stamp Stampendous' Rain Flower image in Memento Tuxedo Black on Bristol weight board and color with the following Chameleon pens using different fuse times to change the tone of the ink.  NU2 Light Pink, CG5 Cool Grey 5, YL2 Summer Sun, BL2 Baby Blue, and YG3 Spring Meadow.

3.     Die cut image with Elizabeth Crafts Designs Stitched Circles.

4.     Highlight rain drops with irRESISTable Pico Embellisher in Shimmer and set aside to dry.

5.     Die cut Spellbinders Classic Scalloped Circle from yellow cardstock.  Die cut Sizzlets Tag, Crescent from Bristol board and yellow cardstock.

6.     Stamp sentiment on tag in Versa Magic Aegean Blue and heat emboss with clear embossing powder using Technique Tuesdays Say It Hugs and Say It Happy sets.  Adhere yellow backing tag and add an eyelet.  Loop three strands of baker’s twine through the eyelet.

7.     Apply Versa Magic Aegean Blue to Goosebumps background with an ink dauber.

8.     Wrap baker’s twine around background and secure, and adhere sentiment tag.

9.     Trim yellow background and adhere to A6 card base and use dimensional adhesive to adhere background.  Adhere image backed with scalloped circle background

It’s Raining!

Well not really here in Central Oregon, and in other parts of the country it is snowing . . . but I am sure it is raining somewhere!  Along the I-5 corridor in Oregon and Washington is a good bet!  At any rate it is the the theme for Retro Rubber Blog Challenge for the next two weeks.  Do go check out the fun cards created by the Design Team.  Just a few housekeeping details as well, we were not able to consider a few of the lovely cards in the last challenge as some of the rules were not followed.  Please read the rules here and then join us in this challenge!

I have very few stamps that are the rainy day theme, probably because I have lived the majority of my life where rain is frequent and it’s not my favorite weather condition?  I used to say in the winter when I lived in the Willamette Valley, if it is raining here then at least it is snowing in the mountains for skiing!  Now I live in the sunny high dessert of Central Oregon.  Can’t complain!

I recently received my shipment of 30 Chameleon pens that I ordered way back in October  or November.  They had a successful crowd funding to get the new colors to market and I am loving them!   This project was perfect to try out my new color selections!

Directions:

1.     Stamp Fiskars Layer Away Variety (about 2010?) in Memento Bamboo Leaves on Bristol weight board 100 lb.  This weight of cardstock holds up better to alcohol makers and glossy accents. 

2.     Stamp Posh Impressions by Rubber Stampede grass (1995) in Memento Bamboo Leaves.  Stamp the image on a post-it note and fussy cut to create a mask.  Mask first image and stamp a second to complete grassy area. 

3.     Mask grass image and stamp Daisy Kingdom’s Bear with an umbrella stamp (circa 1988!) in Memento Tuxdedo Black.

4.     Stamp Studio G’s Flowers (~ 2008) and Rubber Stampede’s mini butterfly (~1998) in Memento Tuxdedo Black to complete the scene.

5.     Color scene with Chameleon pens in the following colors:  GR1 Green, OL3 Olive Green, NU4 Neutral Grey 4, PK4 Peony Pink, PK5 Fuchsia, NU0 Sand, NU4 Caramel, BR3 Hot Cocoa, YL3 Summer Sun, YO2 Mellow Yellow.  Most coloring was done in full tone, with a few fuses to lighten up the color on the body of the butterfly and to variegate the color in the grass.

6.     Stamp Studio G’s “Hello” sentiment in Memento Danube blue.  Mask stamp Fiskars Layer Away Variety in Memento Bamboo Leaves around one corner and repeat on the second corner to create a matching frame.

7.     Stamp and fussy cut masks for the bear and butterfly images and place over images.  Use an InkBlusher and a cloud stencil to create a cloudy sky.  Memento Grey Flannel and Danube Blue were a great color combo for this purpose.  I used an old Fairytale Creations Chalk Talk stencil for my clouds.

8.      Ink the edges of the base card with Memento Bamboo Leaves and an InkBlusher.

9.     Trim each of the images and the patterned paper (very old out of my stash!) to fit the front of the card.  Tie a length of yellow sheer ribbon around the sentiment panel. Back the images with pink cardstock and adhere the card together.

10.  Add Wet Looks or another product like Glossy Accents to the umbrella, rain hat, raincoat, and boots to make them shiny.  Set aside to dry.
