Sketch Time for Retro Rubber

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of July?  At any rate we have another sketch challenge over at Retro Rubber, one created by yours truly.

I didn't have specific images in mind when creating this sketch, but once it was time to make a card the stamps from Hero Arts release in 2017 of Color Layering Koi and Frame Cuts were a perfect fit.  When I lived in Japan as an exchange student I would marvel at the Koi ponds and gorgeous fish.

To maintain a sense of proportions I decided a A7 (5" x 7") would work best.  I used cool serene colors for this card because this card would be sent to my mother for my dad's birthday.  One his birthday she visits his columbarium at the Willamette National Cemetery.  I cannot be there is person, but want her to know that I am there with her.

  • The koia, leaves, and water lily were stamped in layers with Versa Magic in Thatched Straw, Mango, Aspen Mist, See Breeze, and Night Sky.
  • The diagonal strip is masked off, and inked in Thatched Straw and the words stamped in Mango.
  • The light aqua card base is trimmed to 4.75" x 6.75.
  • White cardstock is trimmed to 4.5" x 6.5" and a circle is die cut to match the sketch.
  • The bubble images are stamped inside the open area in Night Sky.
  • The base and white cardstock is layered and mounted with dimensional foam adhesive to the card front.
  • The sentiment is stamped in Night Sky and die cut with Fawn Cuts Banners and inked in Night sky as well.
  • The image layers are added to the card.
  • Nuvo Crystal Drops in Metallic Navy Blue are added to finish the card.

Crafting this card brought me peace too as I fondly remembered my Dad, it's been 3 years since his passing.  I am thankful for the parents that raised me!!!!

Please do join along with us at Retro Rubber.   We have a few simple rules.

  • We require stamps older than one year.  If we feel you are using newer stamps, you may be disqualified from the challenge without notification.

Christmas Inspiration for Retro Rubber

Here we are the last challenge of the year at Retro Rubber!  Add another card to your Christmas stack to be shared with others!  Wonderful Christmas colors with a rustic theme.  Enjoy and hope to see you in our gallery!

I ordered some fun new dies from Crafter's companion and they have been a blast to decorate.

  • I started by centering the Sprig of Holly Die on the front of a 6.25" x 9" card base and die cut and pressure embossed the design.
  • With an ink dauber I inked Versa Color in Lime through the die.
  • Inakadinkado's Christmas greetings snowflake swirl from 2011 was used to stamp sparkly swirls in Delicata Golden Glitz on the rest of the front of the card.  The die was left in place.
  • A section of light green cardstock 6.25" x 2.75" was also stamped with Inakadinkado's swirls used to stamp sparkly swirls in Delicata Golden Glitz.
  • The red ribbon and berries are drawn in with Nuvo Crystal Drops in Autumn Red.
  • The sentiment from Unity 2014 is stamped and embossed with Delicata Golden Glitz and Gold embossing powder on a red scrap.  The corners are rounded and the edges are heat embossed to match the sentiment.
  • the sentiment is backed with matching light green cardstock and then adhered to the front of the card.  The rest of the card is assembled, including a white cardstock liner.

Thanks so much for stopping by and enjoy the season!  We have a few simple rules at Retro Rubber:

Late Summer Flowers for Retro Rubber

Wow, it is almost September!  We have another fun challenge over at Retro Rubber!  Please do come and play along!  The design team and guest designer have done a fantastic job.

I will be honest . . . I did two trials to get a card I really like.  I am not going to post the first try, but just so you know I too have inspiration blocks that I just have to work through!

The wood table inspired the use of Kraft cardstock, the flower vase and green grass lead to my choices for other colors.

  • Cardmaking and Papercraft a magazine from the UK has a free gift with every edition.  This is from August of 2019.  The leaves are stamped in Versa Color Green Tea and die cut with Spellbinders Petite Ovals Small (2008).
  • The flower images are stamped in Versa Color Scarlet, Canary, and Orange.  The ink is layered to make the different colors of yellow-orange.  The images are die cut with the matching dies.
  • The butterfly die cut is inked with Versa Color Canary.
  • The outer butterfly (still from the same set) is die cut from Kraft cardstock.
  • The Spellbinders Floral Ovals (2011) was the perfect compliment to the design of the card.
  • The sentiment is stamped in Versa Color Winter Green so it would show up better on the Kraft cardstock, then die cut with a die from Heartfelt Creations Luggage and tags die set.
  • A REALLY ancient piece of 8.5" x 11" patterned paper is used as a background.  I have had it since my early card making days maybe all the way back to 1997!
  • The layers are adhered together with thin dimensional foam adhesive on a Kraft cardstock base.
  • Some of the flower are adhered directly to the card, other use dimensional foam adhesive.
  • My recent acquisition of nuvo crystal drops allowed me to add just the right touch to the center of the flowers and the body of the butterfly.  Dandelion Yellow, Ripened Pumpkin, and Bottle Green are used here.

I am really please with this version of the card and can not wait to send it off in the mail.  Please do come play along with us at Retro Rubber!   We have a few simple rules:
