Fall Color Challenge

A wonderful fall color challenge is on tap for our new Retro Rubber Blog Challenge. 

I was inspired by a fellow AIR over at Imagine to create this version of a clean and simple birthday card.  It came together in about 15 minutes!

Step One:

Determine size of front panel and use a deckle edge ruler to tear water color paper to size.  Spritz with Ink Potion No. 9.  Ink Yvonne Albrition Designs Marble from about 1999 with Kaleidacolor Tomato Vine and stamp.  Ink will bleed around main stamp image.  Dab off excess with paper towel.

Step Two:

Mask unwanted portion of sentiment stamp from the Hero Arts Many Birthday Messages with tape and ink with StazOn Saddle Brown.  Remove tape and stamp sentiment in the lightest color section of the stamped image. 

Step Three:

Use a deckle edged ruler to tear hand-made paper to size to fit the front of an A7 Kraft card and adhere.  Tie decorative fiber around card and mount to front of card.

Ink Diffusion with Ink Potion No. 9

I have a very fun card and tutorial featured on the Imagine blog today.  With the changing of seasons into fall we are surrounding by nature and the wonderful colors of autumn.  The air is a little crisper, the leaves are crunchy, and it is time for a little fall fun.   I decided to create a water-colored fall tree surrounded by its fallen leaves.

Skill level:  Beginner

Time:  1 hour

Directions:

Step One:

Die cut Spellbinders Labels Forty Nine and Labels 49 Decorative Elements from watercolor paper.  Notice that the Decorative Elements have leaves and an acorn in each corner, which I thought was very appropriate for a fall card!

Step Two:

Stamp Hero Arts Color Layering Fall Trees in StazOn Saddle Brown.  Select sentiment and position in a curve on the acrylic block.  This is one of the reasons I like working with clear stamps because you can gently change the shapes of long slender images. 

Step Three:

Thoroughly saturate the die cut with Ink Potion No. 9.  Starting with a lightest color in Memento Pear Tart stamp one of the leaf layers over the trunk image.  The color will diffuse around the image and become faint.

Step Four:

Stamp another layer of leaves in the next darker ink, in this case Memento Cantaloupe over the trunk and across the bottom of the image to start the layer of leaves on the ground.  Continue with the next layers in successively darker inks, in this example Tangelo, Peanut Brittle, and Potter’s Clay are used.  The leave images will become less diffuse as the Ink Potion No. 9 dries.  Dab off excess with a paper towel.

Step Five:

Use an Ink Blusher to ink around the edges of the die cut with Memento Potter’s Clay.  With intricate shapes such as Labels Forty Nine, the Ink Blusher allows you to evenly ink in crevices and around curves.

Step Six:

Use an Ink Blusher to ink the outer edges of the Labels 49 Decorative Elements die cut with Delicata in Celestial Copper.  It is one of my favorites for the fall season! 

Step Seven:

The Kraft cardstock base is stamped with the layering leaves images using Memento Cantaloupe, Tangelo, Peanut Brittle, Potter’s Clay, and Delicata Celestial Copper.

Step Eight:

Adhere the layers together with dimensional foam adhesive.

Boo! It's Halloween!

Now that we are in October it is time to start planning for Halloween.  Retro Rubber Challenge Blog is no different, our theme is Boo!  It’s Halloween, so come and play along and share your Halloween themed creation.

 

I knew I wanted to use this black cat stamp and die from Hampton Art that I bought last year in 2015 and found a few more stamps to accent this scary furry feline.  

First the very old Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers moon image from about 1998 is stamped on cream cardstock in Versa Mark Persimmon and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  Using a sponge dauber a bit of Versa Mark Thatched Straw is added to make the moon glow a bit.  The moon is masked with a circle die cut and the rest of the back ground color is inked with Versa Mark Night Sky and an ink blusher.  The sentiment by Hampton Art (2015) is stamped in Delicata Black Shimmer and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.

The cat is stamped on cream cardstock Delicata Black Shimmer and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  The matching die cut creates a quick embellishment that is easy to pop up.  The eyes were colored with Memento Dual Marker in Cantaloupe.

The fence was fun to create using Unity’s Grainy Background which I believe I’ve had for a couple of years.  One of the stamp purchases where the date was not recorded.  I stamped the image twice on Kraft cardstock in Versa Mark Jumbo Java.  The image was cut into 3/8” strips, with one end trimmed into a point to create the wooden picket fence.  The fence is assembled and adhered to the card with dimensional foam adhesive.  The black cat is perched above and adhered with dimensional foam adhesive.  The card base has the matching Versa Mark Persimmon inked around the edges before the card is completely assembled.

Echo Park Blog Hop Oshkosh Layout

Fun times with Imagine and Echo Park Paper, we are having a blog hop!  (The blog hop list is at the end of this post.)  Remember to leave a comment for a chance to win prizes from Imagine and Echo Park Paper, one comment per blog post please!  I have been planning this layout since the blog hop started taking shape as I knew that Echo Park and Carta Bella had some amazing paper collections and dies and stamps that would work perfectly with my intended airplane theme. 

My family has attended the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin several times even though the round trip is about 4,000 miles from our home in Central Oregon.  We were fortunate to attend again in 2016 along with my parents and siblings.  The hardest part of creating this layout was selecting a limited number of photos!  The Echo Park Jack & Jill Boy paper collection paired nicely with Carta Bella dies and stamps and a few Imagine products to make a quick and easy layout.

Skill level:  Beginner

Time:  1 hour

Directions:

Step 1:  Use a Sponge Dauber to ink with Brilliance Starlite Silver and the Carta Bella Vintage Airplane stencil on desired background paper.  The beauty of a directional stencil and ink is that once cleaned the stencil can be reversed and have the airplanes face towards the middle of the layout.  (Side note--I placed the inky stencil on white cardstock and ran a brayer over it for use at a later time!)

Step 2: Die cut and stamp airplane and hot air balloon from coordinating red cardstock and Memento Paris Dusk.  Die cut the Vintage Airplane body from red cardstock.  To maintain the color scheme, use a sponge dauber to ink a section of the red cardstock and die cut accent elements for Vintage Airplane and assemble.

Step 3:

Ink edges of photos with Memento Paris Dusk to add just a hint of color.  Print journaling on white cardstock. Trim and adhere selected papers and photos to background cardstock.  Adhere title stickers and number stickers to each photo.   Another side note--I really like the airplane paper and want to use it on layouts for both of my son's albums.  It was easy to stretch my supplies with a little ink and a stencil!

Regal Purple Masquerade Mask

One of my favorite colors is purple, and with Halloween right around the corner I decided to make myself a fun Masquerade Mask to celebrate the season. You can totally customize the perfect mask for your Halloween party or to answer the door for Trick-or-Treaters  Check out the post on the Imagine Blog for this and other fun ideas!

Skill level: Advanced Time: 2hours

Directions: 

 

Step One:
Measure to determine the width needed for the mask and sketch the mask on scrap paper folded in half. Cut out the mask and eye holes and check for fit. Adjust as necessary, the crazy cross-eyed look is optional!

Step Two
Place pattern over thick fun foam and cut out with scissors and craft knife. 

Step Three:

Die cut embellishments.  The lace edging is die cut from white wool felt.  Wool felt is easily die cut and can be colored with All Purpose Ink.  Synthetic craft felt will not give the same results.  Embellishments are die cut from Snakeskin Vertigo, but any Vertigo will work well as the pieces are small enough only the iridescent effect is apparent.

 

Step Four:
Spread Creative Medium in Purple Iridescent over the surface of the mask and set aside to dry. 

 

Step Five:
Mix Ink Potion No.9 and All Purpose Ink in Thistle in a small spray bottle. I wanted my lace a dark purple so I added about 20 drops to the small bottle which was filled about quarter way with Ink Potion No. 9. 

 

Step Six
Spritz wool felt die cut lace and 48 inches of silk 1⁄4” ribbon with API mixture. I moved the felt and ribbon around on my work surface to soak up the API to obtain the dark Thistle color. Set aside to dry.

 

Step Seven
Adhere the wool felt lace with a glue dot type of adhesive. I used Therm O Web Zips Ultra Thin. Adhere jewel bling to the front of the Vertigo die cuts and adhere to the mask with glue dots behind the bling. Take care in the application as the glue dots will lift the dried Creative Medium from the fun foam if you try to move them after the first touch.

 

 

Step Eight
Mark and punch holes to apply an eyelete on each edge of the mask. Thread the ribbon through the holes to tie the mask into place.
